A properly structured internal linking architecture tells Google — and increasingly the AI systems that synthesise answers from the web — what a site is genuinely expert in. It encodes the knowledge graph of the business into the website’s structure. It creates the topical clusters that signal: this domain is the authority on this subject, in this geography, at this level of depth.
The difference between a website with 90 articles and a website with 90 articles and a deliberate linking architecture is not a small difference. It is frequently the difference between ranking and not ranking at all.
What Google reads in a link
A link between two pages does several things simultaneously.
It passes a portion of the linking page’s authority to the linked page — this is the mechanism most people know. But it also encodes a semantic relationship. When a page about bathroom renovation methodology links to a case study about a specific bathroom project, Google registers: these two pages are related. The case study supports the methodology. The methodology explains the case study. They are part of the same body of knowledge.
When multiple pages all link to the same hub page, Google registers: this hub page is the central reference for this topic within this site. Something worth elevating. Something with enough supporting evidence behind it to be treated as an authoritative answer.
This is how topical authority is built architecturally, not just by publishing content.
The hub-and-spoke model, applied
A topic cluster has a clear structure: a hub page, and a set of supporting articles that each cover a specific aspect of the hub’s broader subject.
The hub page for “bathroom renovations in KZN” might make a set of claims: our process, our results, our expertise, our geography. Each of those claims is supported by a spoke page. The case study that demonstrates the process. The market intelligence article that explains why the KZN bathroom renovation landscape is structured the way it is. The day-by-day account that shows how a project unfolds. The analysis of why Umhlanga searches behave differently to Durban North searches.
Each spoke page links back to the hub. The hub links forward to each spoke. A visitor — and a search engine — can navigate the full depth of what the site knows about this subject.
The effect on ranking: when Google encounters a new piece of content that links to this hub and is linked from it, the whole cluster benefits. The hub page gains authority from the new spoke. The new spoke gains relevance from the hub and its cluster. Every addition to a well-structured cluster increases the authority of everything already in it.
This is compounding. Each new article makes previous articles more valuable.
What breaks this
The most common failure mode is fragmented content creation. Articles are written as isolated pieces — a topic for this month, a question we answered for a client, a keyword someone identified. Each article is individually reasonable. Collectively, they form no coherent knowledge structure.
There are no hubs. There are no clusters. The links, if they exist at all, are navigational — pointing at the homepage, or at a generic “services” page, rather than at the specific content that contextualises what the new article is saying.
Google encounters this structure and reads: a site with many pages on many subjects, none of which appears particularly authoritative. No single cluster is deep enough to suggest genuine expertise. No hub page has enough support around it to elevate.

Building a genuine topical authority structure is not complicated. But it requires decisions that most sites never make.

It requires every new piece of content to be assigned to a cluster, linked to the relevant hub, and linked back from the hub in return.
It requires that when the content writer and the technical team sit down, they are working from the same map. The writer is not just producing words. The technical implementation is not just publishing them. Both are making decisions that together determine where this content sits in the knowledge structure — and what authority it will accumulate over time.
In a coordinated system, this is a routine decision. In a fragmented team where the content writer does not know the link architecture and the developer does not read the content, it does not happen.

There is a secondary effect that is worth noting.
A well-structured internal linking architecture is only as valuable as the content it connects. Links between thin, generic, or AI-generated pages create a cluster of low-quality content.
