The Top 10 for “Painters Durban”

| Position | Domain | Type |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | snupit.co.za | Aggregator |
| 2 | gumtree.co.za | Aggregator |
| 3 | facebook.com | Social platform |
| 4 | painters-durban.co.za | Direct |
| 5 | facebook.com | Social platform |
| 6 | procompare.co.za | Aggregator |
| 7 | gumtree.co.za | Aggregator |
| 8 | dreamcoatpainting.co.za | Direct |
| 9 | cylex.co.za | Directory |
| 10 | bark.com | Aggregator |
Six of the top ten results are aggregators, directories, or social platforms. Not one independent painting contractor appears in the top three. The first direct business site is at position 4.
This is the highest aggregator penetration of any query we track. The industry that has built its entire client acquisition model on word-of-mouth and referrals has, without anyone noticing, handed its digital discovery channel to three companies it has no relationship with.
Why Painters Are Exposed
The aggregator capture of any industry follows a predictable sequence. A platform identifies an underserved query. It builds a category page — often nothing more than a curated list — that is better optimised than anything the businesses themselves have built. Google rewards the page because it answers the query comprehensively. Individual businesses, who have weak or absent websites, appear on the aggregator’s platform and nowhere else.
Painting and decorating is particularly exposed because:
The barriers to entry are low. Any tradesperson can list on Gumtree or Snupit within minutes. No verification. No proof of work. No technical requirements. The aggregator accumulates hundreds of listings that collectively produce the trust signals Google looks for.
The businesses themselves often have nothing. A painter with twenty years of experience in Durban North may have no website, no claimed Google Business Profile, and no schema markup. Their only digital presence is an unmanaged listing that someone else controls.
The query is ambiguous. “Painters Durban” returns a mix of painting contractors, decorators, and art-related results. Google defaults to the aggregator when it cannot identify a clear authoritative direct source.
What Painting Contractors Umhlanga Looks Like
For the same trade, two suburbs away, the picture is different.
“Painting contractors Umhlanga” — top three:
| Position | Domain |
|---|---|
| 1 | performancepaint.co.za |
| 2 | painters-durban.co.za |
| 3 | dreamcoatpainting.co.za |
Three direct business sites in the top three. No aggregators. The businesses that bothered to build a real website — one that names Umhlanga in its content — are visible. The query is more specific, the competition is lower, and structured content wins.
This is the same pattern across every trade we track. The broad city-level query (“painters Durban”) is aggregator territory. The geographically specific query (“painting contractors Umhlanga”) is where businesses with real websites can compete.
Where This Leads
A painting contractor who relies on Gumtree or Snupit for digital leads has built their pipeline on someone else’s land. Those platforms keep the data, set the pricing, and change the rules. The contractor is a listing, not a business.
The alternative — a properly structured website with location-specific pages, a Google Business Profile, and schema that tells Google exactly what services are offered in which areas — is not a technical project. It is a positioning decision. The businesses that make it are visible in Umhlanga. The ones that do not are invisible behind six rows of platforms they do not control.
