The Web Foundation Score: What It Measures and Why It Matters

The Web Foundation Score is a composite measure of a website’s current technical build quality — a single figure that encodes performance, crawl access, trust signals, and structured data implementation into a score out of 25. The number is not a grade. It is a gap analysis. It describes the distance between where a website is and where it needs to be to compete in its specific market.

The market average across the KZN businesses the TVS audit platform has processed is 8 out of 25. Most websites are failing most of the criteria, most of the time.

What the score measures

The Web Foundation Score is derived from four component areas, each measured against documented criteria drawn from how Google’s ranking systems actually evaluate pages.

Performance measures how efficiently the website serves its content. Largest Contentful Paint — how long the biggest visible element takes to load. Interaction response time — how quickly the page responds to a tap or click. Cumulative Layout Shift — whether elements on the page move around as they load, disrupting the user’s experience. These are not abstract technical metrics. They are the Core Web Vitals that Google uses as direct ranking inputs and that users notice, even if they cannot name them.

A site that takes four seconds to load a hero image on mobile loses the visitor before they have read a word. A site that shifts its layout when an ad or font loads late damages both user experience and its own ranking signal simultaneously.

Access measures how easily Google’s crawlers can reach and understand the site. Is there a sitemap? Is it submitted to Search Console? Are there redirect chains that waste crawl budget? Are pages reachable within three clicks from the homepage? Is the content rendered server-side on the first crawl pass, or does it rely on JavaScript execution that Google’s crawler may not complete?

A site with great content that Google cannot reliably access is, from Google’s perspective, a site with no content.

Trust measures the signals that tell Google the website belongs to a real, verifiable business entity. SSL certificate status. Domain age. Backlink profile — not the volume, but the quality and the absence of toxic signals. Consistent Name, Address, and Phone (NAP) information across the website, the Google Business Profile, and the third-party directories where the business appears.

The 2024 Google API leak confirmed that Google classifies every domain’s homepage into a trust tier: not trusted, partially trusted, or fully trusted. This classification limits the ranking value the domain can receive from any inbound link. A homepage classified as not trusted discounts the value of every backlink it earns. Getting into the trusted tier requires real-world signals — a verified Business Profile, matching NAP, named principals, active social links — not just technical SEO.

GEO and AI readiness measures the structured data layer that communicates directly with Google’s knowledge systems and, increasingly, with AI-powered search engines. LocalBusiness JSON-LD — the machine-readable declaration of what the business is, where it is, what it does, and how to contact it. FAQPage schema on the homepage. Service schema on individual service sub-pages. The llms.txt file that tells AI crawlers how to interpret the site. Open Graph tags that determine how the site appears when shared or synthesised by AI systems.

A business without structured data is a business that Google and AI systems must infer from context. A business with complete, correct structured data is one those systems can read directly. The difference in citability — in appearing confidently in AI-generated answers — is significant.

How the audit derives it

The TVS audit platform processes a submitted domain automatically. It crawls the site’s publicly accessible pages, analyses their content, and evaluates each page against the documented criteria in each of the four component areas.

The crawl is structured. For each page, the platform records: title tag content and length, meta description presence and length, H1 presence and content, heading hierarchy, image alt text coverage, internal link anchor text quality, word count, page load time, schema types present, and canonical URL configuration. These readings are then scored against the threshold criteria that define each component.

The component scores are combined into the Web Foundation Score. Each component contributes proportionally — a site can perform strongly in one area and weakly in another, and the score reflects both. The breakdown by component is what tells TVS where to direct the first intervention.

The competitor context

A Web Foundation Score in isolation is less useful than a Web Foundation Score in context. A score of 10 means something different if your main competitor scores 6 than if they score 18.

The TVS audit platform uses the Google Places API to establish competitive context before the score is presented. Given a business’s address and category, the API returns the businesses that Google considers geographically adjacent competitors — the businesses appearing in the map pack for the same category in the same location, and their proximity to the audited business.

This matters for two reasons. First, it tells TVS who the real competitors are — not who the business owner thinks they compete with, but who Google is currently serving instead of them for the same query intent. These are not always the same businesses. Second, it allows the audit to run the same crawl against the competitor sites and produce comparative scores. A business with a Web Foundation Score of 9 competing against businesses scoring 5, 6, and 7 is in a different strategic position from the same score competing against businesses scoring 14 and 16.

The geographic element of the competitor discovery is what makes this analysis locally specific. A plumber in Pinetown is not competing with a plumber in Umhlanga for most of their queries. The map-based competitor identification finds the businesses that share the same local intent queries — the businesses appearing two or three positions above or below in the map pack — and the audit platform profiles them as a set.

What the score informs

The score is the starting point for a conversation, not the end of one.

A business scoring 4 out of 25 has foundational problems that prevent any other investment from working. Before content, before backlinks, before schema refinement — the site needs to be served correctly over HTTPS, it needs a sitemap, it needs an H1, it needs its contact information present in a form Google can read. These are not SEO optimisations. They are the minimum viable requirements for Google to take the site seriously at all.

A business scoring 14 out of 25 is a different conversation. The foundation exists. The gap is in the upper gates — topical authority, structured data completeness, AI readiness. These require investment in content strategy and technical implementation, not a rebuild from scratch.
