Which KZN Markets Are Actually Open Right Now

Mapping 43 tracked KZN industries by how often results change against how tightly the top spot is held shows Electrical Services, Solar Energy and Flooring & Tiling sitting at genuinely contestable positions, while Bathroom Renovations churns constantly and stays locked anyway.

“Is this market worth entering” is usually answered by gut feel — how many competitors a business owner can personally think of, how saturated the market looks from the outside. The tracked KZN search data answers a narrower but checkable version of the same question: for a given industry, how often does the visible result set actually change, and how tightly does one domain hold the top spot?

Plotting all 43 tracked industries on those two measures produces a genuine surprise. The two numbers do not move together the way you’d expect.

The three most contestable positions right now

Three industries currently sit at real grip levels under 60% — meaning even their strongest holder has not locked position one for the majority of observations:

  • Electrical Services — 58.8% grip, 14.6% churn
  • Solar Energy — 55.9% grip, 11.4% churn
  • Flooring And Tiling — 55.9% grip, 9.2% churn

In each of these, no single domain has established the kind of dominance seen in the 88%-locked searches documented separately. A new, well-built entrant is not trying to dislodge an entrenched leader in these three — there currently isn’t one.

The market that looks open and isn’t

Bathroom Renovations is the opposite case, and it’s the best-evidenced industry in the dataset — seven tracked searches, not just one or two. Its result set churns constantly (14.5%, among the highest of any tracked industry) and the top spot is still held 82.7% of the time by whichever domain is currently strongest for a given search.

Read on churn alone, Bathroom Renovations looks like the most winnable market in KZN — constant movement, lots of activity. Read on grip, it’s one of the more locked ones. Both readings are correct. The activity is happening beneath the top spot, not at it. A business entering this market should expect a genuinely contested middle of the results and a difficult, well-defended top position — a different fight than Electrical Services or Solar Energy present.

Why this only works as a pair of numbers

Churn on its own would have ranked Bathroom Renovations as the most open market in KZN. Grip on its own would have ranked it among the most locked. Neither number alone gives an honest picture; the two together do. That is the specific reason this is reported as a pair rather than a single “opportunity score” — collapsing it into one number would hide exactly the distinction that matters.

What to check before choosing a market

Before assuming a market is winnable because it “seems busy,” or unwinnable because one name keeps coming up, this is worth checking directly: is the top position actually changing hands, or is the churn happening in positions four through ten while position one hasn’t moved? The two questions have different answers depending on the industry, and treating them as the same question is exactly how a market that looks open turns out not to be.

Data note: figures describe observed churn and grip in the TVS-tracked KZN search set from 6 to 25 August 2026. Industries tracked through only one or two searches (noted in the underlying data) carry a thinner evidence base than Bathroom Renovations’ seven; this is not a search-volume or market-size measurement.
