CTM Is Entering Bathroom Renovation Search Results — and Local Specialists Are Being Displaced

TVS monitoring data from August 2026 shows CTM systematically entering the top organic positions for bathroom renovation and flooring queries across Durban. Two local bathroom specialists have been displaced from these positions across three or more monitoring runs.

In the TVS market intelligence dataset, a displacement pair is defined as two domains where domain A exits a tracked search result and domain B enters that same result, and this exit-entry co-occurrence repeats across multiple runs and multiple queries. A single co-occurrence may be coincidence. Repeating co-occurrence across different queries and different runs is a structural pattern — it indicates that the entering domain is taking positions across a category, not just on one query.

The most significant displacement pattern in our August 2026 dataset is CTM entering bathroom renovation and flooring queries across Durban while specific local specialists exit those positions.

The displacement pairs

The TVS system tracks co-occurrence of exits and entries across all monitored results. The bathroom renovation category in August produced the following confirmed displacement pairs:

Pair 1: bellisimoprojects.co.za exiting, ctm.co.za entering

  • Queries: “bathroom renovation Durban”, “bathroom fitters Durban”
  • Co-occurrences: 3 monitoring runs (runs 14, 15, and 17 in the August dataset)

Pair 2: procompare.co.za exiting, ctm.co.za entering

  • Queries: “bathroom renovation Durban”, “custom bathroom renovation Durban”, “bathroom renovation La Lucia”
  • Co-occurrences: 3 monitoring runs (runs 14, 15, and 16 in the August dataset)

CTM is the common entrant in both pairs, across different queries and different run windows. The pattern is not specific to one keyword. It has appeared across queries targeting Durban and targeting La Lucia specifically.

Additionally, CTM entered the top-3 for “flooring Durban” in runs 15 and 17, displacing durbanfloors.co.za — a local Durban flooring specialist — on both occasions.

The three-query, three-run consistency of the CTM entry pattern indicates this is structural, not a ranking fluctuation.

What CTM is and why it ranks

CTM is a national tile, bathroom, and flooring retailer with over 80 stores across South Africa. It is not a renovation company. It does not install bathrooms. It sells the materials — tiles, sanitary ware, shower enclosures — that renovation contractors and homeowners use.

Despite this, CTM is entering and holding organic search positions for queries with clear installation intent: “bathroom renovation Durban”, “bathroom fitters Durban”, “bathroom renovation La Lucia”. These are not product queries. They are queries from people who want someone to renovate a bathroom for them.

The mechanism is brand authority. CTM’s domain carries authority accumulated across its national store network, its catalogue of product pages covering every tile and bathroom product category, and its national GBP presence linked to dozens of verified South African addresses. When Google applies its brand authority signals, CTM’s domain competes — and wins — even on queries where CTM’s actual offering (selling tiles) does not directly answer the searcher’s intent (finding someone to renovate their bathroom).

Google does not always rank the most operationally relevant result. It often ranks the most authoritative domain that has content connected to the query. CTM has pages covering bathroom renovation planning, tile selection guides, and design inspiration content — which are adjacent enough to “bathroom renovation” queries that CTM’s domain authority carries them into positions that, by intent alone, should belong to contractors.

The structure of the bathroom renovation search landscape in KZN

Bathroom renovation is the only industry in the TVS August 2026 dataset classified as “expanding” — the only category with a positive churn trend across all monitored runs. An expanding classification means: new competitors entering the result set, existing positions becoming less stable, and the overall ranking distribution continuing to shift rather than settling.

The churn rate for bathroom renovation queries averages 3.11 domain changes per run. The material movement rate (significant position changes) averages 4.06 per run. Both figures are higher than any other category in the current dataset. The market is active, which means the first-page hierarchy is not fixed — but it also means any position gained can be lost, and the incoming pressure is increasing.

CTM’s entry into this expanding market adds a national-scale competitor to a category that was previously competed by local Durban contractors and directory aggregators. The local contractors competing for bathroom renovation positions are now doing so alongside CTM’s domain, which carries authority from an entirely different business model.

What local bathroom specialists have that CTM does not

CTM can rank on brand authority. It cannot produce content that a local bathroom specialist can.

A renovation company in Durban has access to a class of content that no national retailer can generate at scale: documented local project experience. Photographs of actual bathrooms completed in La Lucia, Durban North, Umhlanga. Client testimonials that name a suburb. A portfolio of completed work in the specific areas where the contractor operates. The practical knowledge of which materials suit coastal KZN conditions, which products are available locally, and which complications arise in the types of properties common to specific suburbs.

This material is not replicable at national brand scale. CTM sells tiles in every South African city. Its content reflects that generality. A local contractor who publishes documented project records — specific suburbs, specific property types, specific products installed, real before-and-after records — builds content that Google can identify as locally and specifically relevant in a way that a national product catalogue cannot match.

The CTM displacement is real, confirmed across multiple queries and runs, and reflects the August algorithm event’s boost to brand authority signals. But it also defines exactly what the countermove looks like: hyper-local specificity, documented project history, and accumulated reviews that mention place names. These are the signals that national brands structurally cannot produce for any specific suburb.

Snupit and Instagram also entering the La Lucia query

The displacement data for “bathroom renovation La Lucia” is more complex than the main Durban queries. CTM enters this query. So does snupit.co.za — a national trade lead generation marketplace. Instagram.com also enters in the same runs that bellisimoprojects.co.za exits.

This is three different domain types entering a single hyper-local query simultaneously: a national retailer, a lead generation marketplace, and a social media platform. The La Lucia bathroom renovation query is being contested from three structural angles at once, with local specialist contractors as the exiting parties.

The La Lucia query is the more commercially specific version of the bathroom renovation search — a potential customer who knows their suburb and wants a contractor in that area. It is also now one of the most structurally contested positions in our dataset.
